Amy DiGennaro, After the So-called Hours of Philip the Fair, 2007, graphite on paper, 40” x 45”

This image is  part of an ongoing series of drawings.  The title comes from a medieval illuminated manuscript (a “book of hours”), literally called “After the So-Called Hours of Philip the Fair.”  Philip the Fair was the illuminator or illustrator of the manuscript.  I have been looking at illuminated manuscripts and other works that use elaborate borders for reference and inspiration.  I was working with this particular manuscript before noticing the title, which is especially appropriate as this piece is in many ways about the sudden death of my father, Philip DiGennaro, in April, 2006.

All of the images in this series deal with narratives: personal, familial, cultural.  I want to load the images to overflowing and use the circularity of the border-work to suggest no exact starting or finishing point for the narrative, which is non-linear and layered.  I want these drawings to echo the lived experience of these kinds of narratives in all their instability, murkiness and subjectivity.
